On my birthday, I mentioned that I got an email telling me I had been published in Testimony Magazine, the magazine I had originally hoped to intern at during college.

No wonder why you got published, Tabs! It's a great article...if all these years have taught me anything, it's that the best pieces of writing usually do come out from the simplest of human thoughts/feelings.
Powerful article, Tabs. I don't often get choked up over things that I read, but the way you described that day with Pastor Julio...it hit me right between the eyes. How could anyone who has not lived through such a tragedy understand that family's pain?
And yet, you did. Somehow. Not entirely, because that would be impossible, but you felt for them. You prayed with them. You showed them love and compassion during a crisis. For that, the family will never forget your relief work. You made a difference...and you came away from that day with an important lesson. Hopefully, that will become one of many experiences which strengthen your faith.
Also, for what it's worth, this was extremely well-written.
